Veterans Film Festival returns to Australian War Memorial

The 2nd annual Veterans Film Festival (VFF), in partnership with the RSL National, returns to Canberra with a three-day program on 13, 14 and 15 October, 2016 at the Australian War Memorial.

The Festival kicks off with Afghan war epic Hyena Road, a Canadian drama written, directed by and starring Paul Gross, also Rossif Sutherland (son of legendary actor Donald Sutherland). ‘A Canadian sniper team stands at the intersection of three complex tales of modern warfare.’

The screenings include dramas, comedy, animation and science fiction, in feature-length, short film and documentary form. Submissions are selected from both independent and emerging filmmakers, featuring talent from thirteen countries (including Australia, Serbia, UK, Germany and Iran).

Festival director Tom Papas says Canberra is the perfect city for this festival. “The iconic Australian War Memorial is a world-class venue. The festival is a unique opportunity to promote understanding of veterans’ lives and their families, as well as commenting on society’s attitude to war.”

Some of the entertaining short films include Australian offering The Ravens, in which director Jennifer Perrot tells the story of a veteran struggling with the aftermath of battle, and trying to reconnect with his wife and daughter. Ozone is a sc-fi film set in a post-apocalyptic future devastated by global nuclear war, in which Dastagir, one of the few survivors, fights to regain his lost love and rediscover his humanity. Also screening is Red Line an Iranian animation comedy, in which a turtle and a lizard are unwillingly involved in a war between two powers. How will the turtle solve the problem?

The ‘Red Poppy Awards’ in 2016 represent the high point of our festival program. Hand blown glass trophies will be awarded to 4 film categories: Best Australian Feature Film, Best International Feature Film, Best Australian Short Film and Best International Short Film.
